We only invest in the intellectual property related to musical works, with a focus on the “publishing” (songwriting) rights as these generate royalties whenever the work is used, no matter who is performing it. We find this preferable prefer to “master rights”, which relate only to one artist’s specific recording of a work.
Individual genres and music from specific time periods can experience significant resurgence and find new audiences. Our diversified approach allows us to capture this upside and provide a less volatile expected return.
For the classic music we invest in, there is a long track record of the royalty income generated, so we have a very good idea of the revenue stream we are buying. We avoid investing in music created today, as its long-term income potential is unproven.

At Round Hill, we get the music, not just the math: Our team is an effective blend of investment veterans and music industry insiders, allowing us to spot the catalogs with the highest potential, gain preferred buyer status with the relevant artists and estates and acquire the rights at a price that preserves a strong potential return for our investors.
Rather than outsourcing to third parties, we manage our major-market rights administration in-house, typically capturing more of the potential royalty revenues generated when our catalog is streamed, performed or downloaded.
We leverage our wide network of music buyers and artists to find licensing opportunities and help newer artists looking for classic tracks to cover, sample, or otherwise adapt. As well as generating significant direct income, the additional attention these deals give to our catalog often result in massively increased streaming and broadcast revenues over the longer term.
